Microsoft has released a new version of its Windows CE .NET embedded operating system (OS) with support for a strategic future Internet protocol and many desktop file formats, but it is still not the basis of Microsoft’s own device software platforms and does not contain a final version of the .NET Compact Framework.

New Features Include Network Improvement

New features in Windows CE .NET 4.1 include the following:

Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) support substantially expands the address space of the Internet and enhances security. It will be important for networking large numbers of embedded systems and consumer devices (such as mobile technologies for automobiles and wireless digital stereo speakers in homes) onto the Internet. In the nearer term, IPv6 will benefit devices developed for markets outside the United States, where IPv6 will soon be deployed to address critical shortages of Internet addresses.

Speech API (SAPI) 5.0 support, which provides improved speech recognition and text-to-speech functions, useful in devices such as mobile phones that lack keyboards.
