  • Azure Bastion is a new service in public preview.
  • It offers a secured single point of entry for RDP and SSH login to Azure VMs connected to private Azure VNets.
  • The service can help improve security by eliminating connections between a customer’s Azure VMs and the Internet.
  • Bastion provides an alternative to VPNs or customer-maintained bastion hosts.
  • The service has limitations, some of which may be addressed before general availability.

Azure Bastion is a new service in preview that provides secured access to a customer’s Azure VMs via Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) or Secure Shell (SSH) for administration or troubleshooting. Using the Azure portal as an access point, Bastion provides similar functionality as a dedicated bastion host (sometimes referred to as a “jump box”) but is offered as a comprehensive managed service in Azure. Bastion will be of interest to customers who need to securely administer and troubleshoot Azure VMs maintained in private virtual networks (VNets).
