  • The Visual Studio support policy is modified with Visual Studio 2019.
  • Multiple minor update releases will be supported simultaneously and for a longer period than previous Visual Studio versions.
  • The policy gives organizations more time to upgrade as frequent releases arrive.

Visual Studio (VS) 2019, which became generally available in Apr. 2019, uses a new concept called servicing baselines for its support policy. Microsoft will declare minor update releases as servicing baselines, and organizations will have one year to upgrade after a subsequent servicing baseline is declared.

Visual Studio Updates and Support

Major VS versions arrive every two to three years. Minor updates to major versions arrive every one to three months, offering the following:

  • Code editor, debugging, and diagnostics features
  • Programming language additions and enhancements
  • Support for the latest frameworks and third-party tools
  • Bug fixes, such as those requested through customer feedback.

Servicing updates delivering bug fixes to minor versions arrive approximately weekly.
