  • Azure App Service, a PaaS Web application hosting service, supports Linux, including containers.
  • App Service was originally Windows-only, but the added Linux support could make it an alternative for more customers and solutions.
  • Pricing discounts and a free tier could make the App Service offering for Linux attractive.

App Service could be an attractive option for hosting applications and services compared to hosting them in organization-managed servers. Its added Linux support could make it more viable by allowing teams to continue using their existing development environments and tools.

App Service Is PaaS Web Application Hosting Offering

Azure offers several options for hosting Web applications, including Azure VMs (an Infrastructure as a Service [IaaS] offering), Azure Cloud Services (an older Platform as a Service [PaaS] offering), and App Service.

App Service hosts Web applications called Web Apps; services that can drive mobile and other types of applications called Mobile Apps and API Apps; and code routines that can be called from external applications called Functions.
