Analyst ReportMicrosoft Aspires to Follow CCPA Broadly
- When the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) goes into effect in Jan. 2020, Microsoft will honor the “core rights” granted under the act across the United States.
- Microsoft’s efforts to follow the CCPA do not guarantee an organization using Microsoft products and services automatically complies with the CCPA.
- The CCPA could serve as a model for U.S. federal law to follow, so an organization’s efforts to reach CCPA compliance could have broader payoff.
Microsoft will extend the “core rights” granted by the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) to customers in that state to all Microsoft customers in the United States. The CCPA defines privacy rights for consumers to control their data, as well as obligations for businesses that collect, process, and store data about those consumers. Microsoft’s announcement follows a similar extraterritorial extension of privacy rights included in the European Union (E.U.) General Data Protection Act (GDPR) to Microsoft’s customers outside of the E.U. Julie Brill, Corporate Vice President for Global Privacy and Regulatory Affairs, and Chief Privacy Officer, announced the CCPA compliance in Nov. 2019.
