  • Office 365 includes hosted security filtering services designed to block unwanted and malicious e-mail and documents.
  • Integration features mean the services can offer some capabilities that third parties cannot.
  • The most-capable services require licensing premium Office 365 or Microsoft 365 subscription suites.

Three tiers of Office 365 hosted services offer security filtering for e-mail and documents:

Exchange Online Protection offers e-mail filtering to block the commonest types of spam, malware, and phishing messages.

Office 365 Advanced Threat Protection P1 extends Exchange Online Protection with e-mail filtering to block more novel or targeted attacks. It can also filter files in some Office 365 ProPlus applications and Microsoft-hosted services.

Office 365 Advanced Threat Protection P2 extends the P1 tier with reporting, investigation, and mitigation tools for security operations personnel.

The tiers are bundled in a variety of licensing options for Exchange Online, Exchange Server, and other mail systems. (See “Mail and File Filtering Licenses and Suites“.)
