Stream live events are deprecated as of Jan. 31, 2024, and live events are being replaced by Teams town halls as of Sept. 23, 2024.

  • Live events, a feature of Microsoft Stream included with most Microsoft 365 Enterprise plans, enables streaming video broadcast to large audiences.
  • Teams can be used to create live events, offering an alternative to video conferences for presentations to over 250 attendees.
  • Live events are not video conferences; they require additional upfront planning and interaction is limited to text-based Q&A.
  • A Live Events Assistance program (in preview) could help organizations plan and set up live events.

Video conferences in Microsoft Teams have an upper limit of 250 attendees, which can be inadequate for large presentations such as company all-hands meetings, and Teams video conferences are difficult to manage effectively with large audiences. Live events enable video broadcasts from within the Teams application for up to 10,000 attendees, including external viewers who are not licensed for Teams. However, live events are broadcasts with limited interactivity and require more upfront planning than Teams video conferences.
