  • Azure Monitor offers so-called Insights, which provide specialized monitoring capabilities for specific resources such as VMs, containers, and networks.
  • Insights could speed up deployment of monitoring and help organizations choose effective analysis methods and alerting policies.
  • Some Insights tools could help right-size resources to fit performance requirements while minimizing costs.
  • Insights are not available for all Azure services.

Azure Monitor offers a central platform for organizations to gather, analyze, and act on monitoring data from Azure and certain non-Azure resources. Azure Monitor’s primary functionality is collecting, analyzing, and viewing metrics and logs, but without additional context, this data may be difficult to interpret. Insights aim to collate and visualize lower-level data to help customers monitor particular services.

Insights Offer Turnkey Monitoring for Certain Resources

Azure Monitor offers tools for analyzing the data it collects. Metrics Explorer produces reports and charts of numeric data, and Log Analytics provides user interfaces for building and running queries on logged events. These tools can be used for ad-hoc analysis and for creating persistent views, such as portal dashboards, but significant effort is often required to use them for building an end-to-end monitoring experience.
