  • Universal Print is a new hosted printer management service that can replace on-premises Windows Server print servers.
  • The service is included as part of several Microsoft 365 subscriptions at no additional cost, or as a stand-alone subscription.
  • Universal Print currently only works with Windows 10 client devices and does not support macOS or mobile devices.
  • Compatibility with currently available printers is limited and requires new or updated devices or use of a connector application.

Universal Print, which became generally available on Mar. 2, 2021, is a Microsoft 365 feature that replaces Windows Server print server functionality with an Azure-hosted service providing print job queuing, printer management and reporting, and printer device provisioning (via Intune). The service could be useful for customers who want to minimize or eliminate on-premises Windows Server infrastructure but still require print server functionality, such as queue management, usage reporting, and the capability to deploy printers to client devices.
