The Electronic Discovery Reference Model (ERDM) defines an iterative workflow for eDiscovery cases, and Microsoft’s eDiscovery feature supports this workflow with Core and Advanced eDiscovery components. The EDRM (top level) specifies a workflow for identifying users; preserving and collecting their data; processing, reviewing, and analyzing the data; and producing and presenting relevant data as part of an internal investigation or litigation.

Core eDiscovery components (middle level) allow for a basic investigation, including assigning permissions to eDiscovery managers and administrators, creating and managing cases, and holding and preserving data, as well as querying the data prior to exporting it for manual review or additional processing with a third-party eDiscovery tool.

Advanced eDiscovery components (bottom level) assist with more granular management of the holds and data by managing additional data sources, identifying the relevant data, and eliminating duplicates prior to exporting it for production or presentation.
