Analyst ReportRevised OneDrive Support for Windows
- OneDrive support is changing for Windows versions nearing the end of support.
- The change in support could create problems for users who configured and used the wrong OneDrive service to synchronize business files.
- Organizations should ensure their users are not relying on consumer OneDrive and migrate user data if necessary to ensure the longest period of support.
OneDrive support for older versions of Windows is changing to align with Microsoft’s end-of-support dates for those OS versions. The end-of-support dates announced for OneDrive depend on which OneDrive service is in use and whether the organization has purchased Extended Security Updates (ESUs) for the OS. For devices running Windows 7 SP1 with ESUs, OneDrive for Business will be supported until Jan. 2023. OneDrive consumer support will end much sooner, which could cause issues for business users of the consumer service. Although ESUs ensure some level of security fixes for the covered OS, ESUs provide no guarantee that applications or services will continue to support the covered OS.
