  • The SharePoint Framework can be used to customize SharePoint, Teams, and Viva Connections to create functionality specific to an organization.
  • Each platform supports different versions of the framework, leading to possible incompatibilities and the need for extra support.
  • Tools used to create SharePoint Framework customizations must be chosen to match the target platforms.

The SharePoint Framework is a customization engine that can be used to enhance sites with client-side code in both SharePoint Online and on-premises releases of SharePoint Server. As it has evolved, the framework has appeared in more places, allowing developers to reuse their skills to customize other apps and services. However, the framework versions supported can vary by platform, and features supported in one platform may not work the same when ported to another platform.

What the SharePoint Framework Does

The SharePoint Framework provides client-side customization for SharePoint pages and Web Parts. For example, developers can create custom Web Part controls like sliders and custom calendars, which can be embedded within pages on a modern SharePoint site. This capability allows organizations to extend the functionality of these pages, include business-specific processes, and more easily standardize branding across sites.
