Analyst ReportGitHub vs. Azure DevOps
- GitHub has become a center of innovation in Microsoft’s developer platform.
- Azure DevOps remains supported, will receive minor improvements, and is superior to GitHub in some areas.
- Customers can choose between the two or use a mix of both.
- Organizations might consider moving from Azure DevOps to GitHub for reasons other than Microsoft support.
- New projects should use GitHub rather than Azure DevOps when viable.
GitHub will likely supplant Azure DevOps, but not in the short term. Microsoft is expected to support and mildly update Azure DevOps for many years. However, GitHub now receives the most substantial innovations, such as Advanced Security for storing, building, and deploying code; Codespaces, which hosts development environments; and Copilot, which can generate code for developers based on natural language interpretation.
Comparing GitHub and Azure DevOps
Organizations should evaluate both GitHub and Azure DevOps when designing application life-cycle management processes, especially when employing DevOps practices. (The term “DevOps” refers to a strategy where developers, IT, business teams, and users work together in a cycle that frequently improves applications.)
