Analyst ReportRDP Shortpath Optimizes Azure Virtual Desktop Connections
- RDP Shortpath is a feature of Azure Virtual Desktop that can improve the performance of remote desktop sessions.
- It negotiates direct connections between clients and session host VMs and uses network protocols particularly suited to real-time communication.
- An updated version for public networks, in preview, can work in more scenarios and has fewer requirements.
Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) provides a Microsoft-hosted managed service for hosting virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) in Azure that is an alternative to Windows Server Remote Desktop Services (RDS) on-premises. AVD could interest customers looking to move on-premises VDI or hosted applications to the cloud or to deploy new virtual desktop environments without requiring on-premises infrastructure. RDP Shortpath can reduce network latency of AVD sessions, improving overall performance and reducing the interface lag common to remote virtual desktop sessions. However, RDP Shortpath may require additional configuration, and it is available only for Windows client devices, using the Remote Desktop client for Windows Desktop.
