Analyst ReportDatabase Offerings 2024: Understanding Data Lake Options
- Microsoft’s data lake offerings provide scalable hosting options that address large-scale, global demands for storage of unstructured data.
- OneLake, the newest offering, is foundational to Microsoft Fabric, and it will receive the most investment.
- Azure Data Lake Storage is the most stable of Microsoft’s data lake offerings.
- Azure Data Lake Storage and HDInsight are older offerings, but they are likely to remain supported for a significant period.
- OneLake is Microsoft’s primary data lake solution, but customers of the older services need not rush to migrate to it.
Data lakes store large volumes of diverse data (including text, video, and images) for applications such as online customer reviews, social media platforms, and machine logs. The database management landscape for data lake and Big Data offerings include three Azure services: Azure Data Lake Storage (ADLS), OneLake (part of Microsoft Fabric), and Azure HDInsight. ADLS and HDInsight support Hadoop technology. ADLS uses Microsoft proprietary technology, and HDInsight is based on Apache open-source products and is similar to an on-premises Hadoop deployment, providing more customer control. OneLake is built upon ADLS, and it supports ADLS APIs.
