- UPDATE 2023-09-25: Generally available as Azure Update Manager.
- A new Azure Update management center in preview can manage updates for Windows Server and Linux server OSs on Azure VMs and Azure Arc enabled servers.
- The service could streamline OS updates for organizations that have a mix of Azure, on-premises, and third-party cloud servers.
- It is simpler to use and deploy than Azure Automation update management.
- It offers no interoperation with System Center, which many organizations still use for server OS updates.
Azure Update management center (UMC) is a new service in preview that can help administrators assess the OS patching status of and manage patch installation for Windows and Linux Azure VMs and Azure Arc enabled servers. UMC is easier to deploy and manage than Azure Automation update management, which it will eventually replace, and does not depend on Automation or Azure Monitor Log Analytics. When it becomes generally available, UMC could streamline patch management for organizations using Azure VMs or Azure Arc enabled servers, but it provides no utility to customers using on-premises management software such as System Center.
