SharePoint Server is widely used on-premises, but end-of-support dates and limited software compatibility could compel customers to migrate to SharePoint Online. Shown here are the five most recent releases of SharePoint Server, along with information about each version’s Windows Server and SQL Server compatibility, and its ability to be migrated directly to SharePoint Online. The five columns in this chart include:

End of Support, the date where Microsoft will no longer offer product support or patches for a released version of SharePoint Server. SharePoint Server SE is now “versionless” and licensed on a subscription basis (Software Assurance is required). It does not provide the perpetual rights and set support life cycle available with earlier versions of SharePoint Server.

SPMT shows which versions can be migrated to SharePoint Online with the SharePoint Migration Tool. Newer versions are not explicitly supported by the tool.

Hybrid indicates which versions can be partially migrated to a hybrid environment; older versions are not supported.
