Common Area Phones Rebranded to Teams Shared Devices

Common Area Phone (CAP) Device Subscription Licenses (SLs) are used for Teams Phone devices typically placed in areas like a lobby or reception area and not assigned to a single individual. In Nov. 2022, CAP Device SLs were rebranded to Teams Shared Device SLs.

Teams Shared Device SLs provide the same capabilities as CAP Device SLs, including Teams Phone (formerly Phone System), Azure Active Directory Premium P1, Intune, and Exchange Online Plan 2 (for cloud-based voice mail), with no change in cost. A supported device with a Teams Shared Device SL can make use of Teams Phone features including call park, call queues, auto attendants, and call forwarding rules.

Teams Shared Device SLs also support new device classes that were not supported by CAP Device SLs:

  • Microsoft Teams displays, used in hot-desking scenarios, allowing users to sign in and access Teams calling, chat, and meetings
  • Teams panels, used to schedule and provide information about common spaces like conference rooms that
