  • SIP Gateway is a Microsoft-hosted service that allows select third-party VoIP devices to use Teams Phone.
  • Customers migrating to Teams Phone from an on-premises VoIP phone system may be able to reduce costs by reusing handsets.
  • SIP Gateway limitations and the effort needed for device migration could offset the cost savings.
  • Skype for Business Online VoIP devices will stop working with Teams after July 2023 unless they are migrated to SIP Gateway.

Teams Phone services enable receiving and placing external calls on public switched telephone networks (PSTNs) and can be used to provide a Microsoft-hosted Voice over IP (VoIP) solution for voice calling. SIP Gateway, a Microsoft-hosted service, enables compatible devices to use Teams Phone, even devices from other vendors (such as Cisco) or devices built for Microsoft’s legacy Skype for Business offerings. With the capabilities of SIP Gateway, customers who are migrating to Teams Phone can potentially reduce adoption costs by reusing existing handsets. However, devices connected via SIP Gateway have a limited set of capabilities, compatibility is limited to specific device models, and the process of upgrading a device to use SIP Gateway can be involved and time-consuming.
