  • Microsoft is increasingly investing more in Azure services to provide system management capabilities for Windows Server and Linux VMs and hosts.
  • System Center 2022, the latest version of the on-premises management suite, brings support for new OSs, but little in the way of new features.
  • Organizations accustomed to System Center for data-center management will have to adopt several Azure services to duplicate System Center functionality.

Microsoft is emphasizing a hybrid strategy for data-center management, with on-premises tools such as System Center focusing on more integration with Azure services, and Azure-hosted services adding capabilities to manage resources deployed on-premises, or in other clouds such as Amazon Web Services (AWS). Customers should be aware of the server management tools and services Microsoft is focusing on in order to take advantage of new capabilities and to avoid being left using products that are not being updated in a timely fashion.
