Analyst ReportWindows Shared PC Mode
- Windows Shared PC mode helps manage devices that many users access or devices that are dedicated to a single application.
- The mode could make Windows shared and special-purpose devices perform better and generate fewer help-desk calls in healthcare, manufacturing, retail, and other settings.
Windows Shared PC mode is a feature of the Windows 10 and Windows 11 OSs that automatically releases resources consumed by user accounts when they are no longer needed. This automated cleanup can prevent disk space, memory, and registry entries from accumulating when many users sign in to a device that otherwise can hurt performance and reliability. The feature also provides a “kiosk mode” that replaces the desktop with a single application.
The Problem of Account Accumulation
Shared PC mode addresses a historical problem with the Windows Client OS: It was designed for personal computers. The OS assumes that each device has a single primary user or a small number of regular users, as in a home, a small business, or an enterprise that dedicates PCs to users.
