Dynamics AX is a client-server application that supports enterprise resource planning (ERP) with features for working with important business information and records, such as a company’s general ledger, or individual purchase orders or bills of material.

As shown in the bottom of the illustration, Dynamics AX stores application and business data in a single database (labeled AX 2009 Application Database). The product can work with the SQL Server 2005, SQL Server 2008, and Oracle 10g database management systems. Dynamics AX includes a proprietary engine for storing and generating reports. The product can also work with the SQL Server Reporting Services managed reporting engine, as shown at lower right, for report distribution.

A midtier server, labeled the Dynamics AX Application Server, is responsible for the following:

  • Interaction with the application database, such as updates and creation of records, via Dynamics AX database access components
