Tellme upgraded its voice platform in Apr. 2009 and announced an upcoming search application for Windows Mobile devices. Tellme, a subsidiary acquired in 2007, is a Microsoft-hosted speech processing service for voice applications serving telephone users, such as automated front ends to contact centers. The service can make voice applications more efficient and reduce their infrastructure costs, and it could prove a valuable competitive weapon in Microsoft’s competition with Google. However, the future direction of Tellme’s business is not entirely clear.

Voice for Contact Centers and Consumer Services

Tellme hosts a service that provides speech processing for voice applications (see the illustration “Tellme Architecture“) and supports two main businesses:

  • Speech processing services for corporate voice applications, with customers such as American Airlines, E*TRADE, Orbitz, UPS, and Verizon
  • Microsoft voice applications, including a free automated voice business directory and information
