This chart illustrates different versions and features of validation software for various Windows versions. Key changes include the elimination of reduced functionality mode, which disabled certain features until Windows was properly activated. Validation is optional, but is triggered automatically if a user visits and validates at the Microsoft Genuine Windows Web site; requests a genuine Windows download, such as Windows Security Essentials or Windows Media Player from the Microsoft Download Center or Windows Update; or accepts the Windows Activation Technologies (WAT) update from Windows Update. (If a user declines the WAT update, it is not offered again.)

With Windows XP and the manner in which the validation software was originally shipped, most users had installed it before they realized it was optional. The Windows XP version cannot be uninstalled; therefore, it continues to run. Windows Genuine Advantage 1.9 removed Reduced Functionality Mode.
