Analyst ReportWindows Server 2022 Generally Available
- Windows Server 2022 is generally available as a Long-Term Servicing Channel version, and SAC versions are no longer offered.
- New features are sparse, and Microsoft is focusing instead on Azure Stack HCI and an Azure-exclusive edition of Windows Server.
- Customers, even those intending to stay on-premises, should expect increased pressure to adopt Azure-related services and subscriptions.
Windows Server 2022 became generally available in Aug. 2021. The new version is offered only as a Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) version. However, Windows Server 2022 offers little in the way of substantial new capabilities compared to Windows Server 2019. Several new features are exclusive to an edition available only for VMs running in Azure, and future development of data center–related features will focus on Azure Stack HCI, Microsoft’s subscription-based OS for on-premises virtualization and storage. Semi-Annual Channel (SAC) versions will no longer be released, and Windows Server container images are now supported for five years.
