Copilot for Microsoft 365 Architecture

Copilot for ​Microsoft 365 uses the same architecture as all copilots, but it incorporates data from Microsoft Graph, a set of services and APIs that provides access to organizational data including documents, e-mails, calendar data, Teams meetings (including transcripts produced from voice communications), and Teams conversations.

Copilot for Microsoft 365 is typically accessed through a natural language–based conversational UI that appears in a side pane in Office applications such as Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook, and PowerPoint. A user types a prompt, such as “Create a Jira ticket to track the changes outlined in the last e-mail I received from Jim, make it due by the next maintenance date.”

Plugins can be registered with Copilot for Microsoft 365, allowing it to access and perform actions in third-party and line-of-business (LOB) applications, such as work item and expense tracking systems, through those applications’ APIs. The example prompt that requests an Atlassian Jira ticket could be executed if a Jira plugin is deployed.
