  • Windows 365 Enterprise cross-region disaster recovery can help ensure access to Cloud PCs in the event of a long-term Azure regional outage.
  • The feature relies on Windows 365 Enterprise point-in-time restore points and must be configured in advance of any outage.
  • Failover to the disaster recovery environment is manually enabled, and changes made during an event are not replicated back to production.
  • Organizations can take steps now to improve Cloud PC resiliency that will benefit any later cross-region disaster recovery deployment.

Windows 365 Enterprise provides hosted subscription-based Windows desktops called Cloud PCs that are used and managed in the same fashion as a dedicated PC, as an alternative to more complex virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) solutions like Azure Virtual Desktop. Cross-region disaster recovery (DR) in Windows 365 prepares for and streamlines the process of switching a user’s Windows 365 Cloud PC instance to a backup Azure region should the entire host region fail. The feature has additional cost even when not actively in use, and customers must set it up in advance of any outage. Capabilities leveraged by cross-region DR, such as Windows 365 point-in-time restore, can benefit all Windows 365 Enterprise customers and should be adopted by all, even if they do not deploy cross-region DR.
