Three editions of Windows Embedded Server have joined other general-purpose embedded OSs, such as Windows Embedded CE and Windows Embedded Standard edition, as an option for use in devices and appliances. Although the server OSs are joining the embedded product line, they do not offer the same degree of componentization that allows deployment of a highly customized embedded image.

Embedded Servers, Better Dev Support

Windows Embedded CE and Windows Embedded Standard edition (as well as specialized embedded platforms, such as Windows Embedded NavReady 2009 for navigation devices) give developers a high degree of control over which components are included in the OS image for a device. The Windows Embedded Server products, which are available as of Apr. 2009 from embedded partners, do not use similar componentization but offer a full range of server OS functions for use in embedded devices. Three versions will be available for both x86 and x64 processors:

  • Windows Server 2003 for Embedded
