MOM Architecture

MOM uses a three-layer architecture to collect data from monitored computers and present it to operators.

Presentation Layer (left). Web consoles enable operators to view system health and acknowledge alerts. MMC consoles do all that plus provide administrative access. MOM also includes reporting software (based on Access) which can generate predefined reports from stored monitoring data for viewing on the consoles.

Business Logic Layer (center). Consoles access stored monitoring data through Data Access Servers (DASs), which query and update the SQL Server monitoring database.

DASs are also linked to Consolidators, which filter and aggregate monitoring data from agents on monitored computers, and Agent Managers, which are responsible for installing and configuring agents on monitored computers. Use of redundant Consolidator/DAS/Agent Manager computers allows for load balancing and failover.

Agents collect raw monitoring data on each monitored computer. Agents can also filter data according to rules supplied by Agent Managers and can execute scripts on the monitored computers.
