Ex-Yahoo Search Boss to Lead Online

The former head of engineering for Yahoo’s search and advertising group, Qi Lu, will become the new leader of Microsoft’s Online Services Group starting in Jan. 2009. Lu’s appointment, along with the hire of another top executive from Yahoo Search, Sean Suchter, shows that Internet search remains a top priority at the company, and that Microsoft’s interest in Yahoo may have been driven in part by its interest in Yahoo’s search team.

The Online Services Group includes most of Microsoft’s online services for consumers, including Live Search and MSN, but not the Windows Live services and clients, which are part of the Windows organization. The Online Services Group also includes the Advertiser and Publisher Solutions organization, which oversees tools and services for advertisers and publishers, including most of the products and personnel gained in Microsoft’s 2006 acquisition of aQuantive.
