Lync Server Enhanced 911 (E911) support allows emergency personnel to locate a person requiring emergency services. Shown here are the components required to transmit the physical location of a Lync Server user at a company’s central site (left) to the Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP, bottom right) of an emergency service dispatcher. The process requires an Emergency Routing Service (ERS, top right), a subscription service offered by Microsoft partners.

Administrators at the organization maintain the Location Information Server (LIS) database (lower left) with physical location information for specific network addresses. An ERS validates this information against a master street address guide for the PSAP.

Whenever a Lync endpoint device is connected to the network (dashed lines), the following occurs:

(1) The Lync Server endpoint client sends a location request with its network information to the LIS server.

(2) The LIS server returns the location information to the endpoint, where it is kept in memory.
