SQL Server 2012 arrived in Apr. 2012 and received Service Pack 1 (SP1) in Nov. 2012.

Future SQL Server releases will probably continue to alternate between releases focused on the core database engine and releases focused on other features, such as business intelligence (BI), with gaps of two to three years in between. SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 became available in July 2012. SQL Server 2012 SP1 delivers BI enhancements and compatibility with SharePoint 2013. SQL Server 2014 was announced and delivered in a preview during June 2013 and is expected in a final release in early 2014.

The Parallel Data Warehouse appliance platform enables organizations to build large data warehouses on an integrated package, including commodity hardware and preinstalled, configured, and tuned software; products based on the platform began to appear from Microsoft’s hardware partners before the end of 2010. The platform was updated to SQL Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 in Mar. 2013 and is intended to deliver a lower operating cost than the current version, while adding new features ahead of SQL Server 2014.
