Yammer directory synchronization and single sign-on (SSO) technologies are being retired in favor of Office 365 replacements. Customers will see partial shutdown of the Yammer directory integration in Apr. 2016 and must complete migrations to Azure Active Directory (AD) by Dec. 1, 2016. For customers of both Office 365 and Yammer, the change will simplify management of Yammer identities. However, the change is one of several recent Yammer service retirements and part of a broader plan to integrate Yammer with Office 365, which could affect plans of all current and potential Yammer customers.

Directory Sync and Single Sign-On Migration by Dec. 2016

Yammer is a Microsoft-hosted social networking service for organizations that offers collaboration spaces with groups, conversations, and data sharing that are similar to public social networking services, such as Facebook and Twitter. It was acquired by Microsoft in 2012 and is included with many Office 365 plans, in particular the Office 365 E1, E3, and E5 plans purchased by most large organizations. Yammer has retained its own directory technologies even as it has been integrated with Office 365. (See the illustration “Yammer Directory Integration Retiring“.)
