SQL Server 2017 Reporting Services receives notable improvements, such as distribution and viewing of Excel workbooks, and delivers a new deployment option, called Power BI Report Server, that can host Power BI reports on-premises. Power BI is the brand name for Microsoft’s family of business intelligence (BI) offerings and the primary focus of the company’s BI efforts. The new Reporting Services deployment option will help organizations that want to use Power BI tools but have security concerns with the Microsoft-hosted Power BI service. However, some configurations require subscriptions and frequent updating of the software.

SQL Server Reporting Services, a component of SQL Server, is a platform for the creation of data-driven reports for either manual retrieval or automatic distribution. Classic Reporting Services is a standard in many organizations for generating traditional business and operational reports derived from data in third-party and in-house systems.
