Analyst ReportSharePoint Spaces Provide Mixed Reality for Collaboration
SharePoint Spaces was removed by Aug. 2025
SharePoint spaces will introduce mixed reality workspaces to SharePoint Online, which could provide an easier-to-use interface for some applications, such as product catalogs or in education. Spaces will let users present content in a 3D space and manipulate it in real time on a SharePoint page. Content can include 3D video, data visualizations, document libraries, images, and org charts. Developers can build spaces with Web Parts atop prebuilt or custom templates that represent a 3D environment, and they can be modified through the SharePoint Framework. Upon release, probably in late 2018, spaces will be available in all Office 365 commercial plans. However, widespread adoption of the technology is likely to be slow, like other virtual reality business applications, and may only be appropriate for limited scenarios. Also, while users will not need a HoloLens device or other headset to view spaces, headsets will enhance some immersive features, such as 360-degree viewing.
