  • Visual Studio Online is a service in preview that hosts development environments so that developers do not need to set up, configure, and maintain them locally.
  • The service also provides a lightweight browser-based integrated development environment (IDE).
  • The service could save time and reduce local hardware requirements, especially for developers who work on multiple projects that use different OSs, programming languages, frameworks, and tools.

(The name “Visual Studio Online” was used for earlier versions of the service that is now called Azure DevOps, but the new Visual Studio (VS) Online service is a separate offering that was launched in 2019.)

Why VS Online?

VS Online aims to reduce the complexities of managing development environments.

Developers often work simultaneously on multiple projects, and each project requires a development environment that has technology dependencies (such as OSs, programming languages, frameworks, and runtimes) installed and configured and has tools (such as editors and debuggers) prepared according to the developer’s preferences.
