Analyst ReportAzure Kubernetes Service Available for On-Premises Servers
- Azure Kubernetes Service, a managed orchestration solution for container-based workloads, can now be deployed on-premises.
- The capability could help customers meet regulatory, connectivity, and security requirements that they previously could not with the hosted service.
- Azure Kubernetes Service deployed on-premises can also be an ideal platform for hosting Azure Arc enabled application and data services.
- It requires a connection to Azure for billing and includes usage-based charges in addition to underlying OS and infrastructure costs.
Azure Kubernetes Service for Stack HCI (AKS-HCI) became generally available in May 2021. It is an on-premises implementation of AKS that can be deployed on Azure Stack HCI 20H2 and Windows Server 2019 Datacenter. AKS-HCI provides a managed Kubernetes environment for customers who need to deploy container-based applications on-premises, and it can host Azure services via Azure Arc enabled application services and data services with less effort than manually configured and maintained Kubernetes deployments.
