Analyst Report.NET 8.0 Arriving with Long-Term Support
- .NET 8.0, in preview, is a good choice for applications requiring longer stability periods because it will be supported until Nov. 2026.
- It includes minor updates throughout many functional areas and brings improved performance, container and Linux support, and enhancements to .NET MAUI.
- ASP.NET Core 8 and Entity Framework Core 8 are arriving with improvements concurrently with .NET 8.0.
The .NET 8.0 cross-platform software development framework is in preview and expected to become generally available in Nov. 2023. New versions of .NET are released annually, alternating between short-term support (STS) and long-term support (LTS) life cycles. .NET 8.0 is an LTS version. .NET supports implementation of many application types across many environments; however, the updates in .NET 8.0 do not significantly expand the framework’s capabilities or the development practices used with it. Rather, the greatest appeal of .NET 8.0 is likely to be its long support horizon.
