This report was updated on Dec. 5, 2023, with the news that Microsoft will make Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) available.

  • Customers need to keep all Windows client devices on a supported version of the OS to optimize support resources and avoid security vulnerabilities.
  • Support for Windows 10 ends on Oct. 14, 2025, but moving to a supported replacement could require hardware purchases now.

PCs and other client devices running an unsupported Windows OS version pose a security threat to everyone running Windows. Although Microsoft programs such as Extended Security Updates (ESUs) reduce the threat, they do not eliminate it, and customers should not rely solely on the availability of ESUs for Windows 10 to extend its use. Organizations should still have internal policies and systems that let them regularly deploy new versions of Windows to all their devices, so they can move most of their devices to a supported version of Windows prior to Oct. 2025.
