Near Term (2025–2026)
In addition to supporting its overall AI initiatives, Microsoft seems to be prioritizing further integrating Azure Function with its database offerings. Improvements currently in preview but which have yet to reach general availability include:
- Additional database support, including Cosmos DB for MongoDB and Azure Database for MySQL, which makes Azure Functions an option for a broader set of customers and use cases
- Integration with Azure AI Foundry Agent Service, enabling Azure Functions to be invoked by custom-built AI agents
- Model Context Protocol (MCP) support, which allows Azure Functions to be invoked from within AI applications running on Azure that use the MCP.
