Visual Studio (VS) is a Windows-based integrated development environment (IDE) that provides graphical tools for designing, coding, debugging, and testing software.

Product: Visual Studio

Licensing: Visual Studio

Near-Term Roadmap (2026-2027)

VS 2026, the latest major version, became generally available in Nov. 2025.

There are improvements in several areas of VS 2026, but the new version is not an overhaul of the product, and there is no requirement to upgrade to VS 2026 unless developers want the new features. The upgrade will probably keep the VS user base satisfied, but it is unlikely to attract a substantial number of new customers.

VS 2026 is the first version to use Microsoft’s Modern Lifecycle Policy, wherein customers receive support as long as they stay current under the product’s licensing and servicing requirements, such as updating the product to the latest so-called Stable Channel.

Future versions of VS will arrive annually rather than at the previous two-to-four-year pace, and they will be synchronized with annual releases of .NET. For example, VS 2027 is expected in Nov. 2026, and VS 2028 is expected in Nov. 2027. Customers who prefer to be on the latest version will need to establish a more frequent upgrade and validation process.
