Microsoft released a Virtual Server service pack in 2007 to support Intel VT and AMD Pacifica virtualization hardware, as well as to ensure technical compatibility with Windows Server 2008. It also released an updated version of Virtual PC.

Windows Server will eventually incorporate hypervisor technology to enable computers to boot directly to virtual machines, rather than first loading a host OS and starting a virtualization layer like Virtual Server. The Windows Server Virtualization capability is planned for release six months after the release of Windows Server 2008.

Virtual Machine Manager 2007 was released to manufacturing in Sept. 2007 with general availability in Oct. 2007. This product enables administrators to create virtual machines (VMs) from physical server configurations and will support centrally managing and moving VMs. In Jan. 2008, Microsoft will release Virtual Machine Manager 2007 Workgroup, for medium-sized organizations. A version that supports Windows Server Virtualization (hypervisor) will likely be released in 2008.
