Windows client and server OSs including Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Longhorn client, and Windows Longhorn Server

The next major Windows releases will be Windows Longhorn client and a major refresh to Windows XP, both due in 2006. The next major Windows Server release will not come until 2007, but an interim release with some new features is due in late 2005. Also due in 2005 are Windows editions that support the new x86-64 processor architecture, a 64-bit architecture developed by AMD and now being adopted by Intel. (See the chart “64-Bit Processors and Products“.)

The new Windows roadmap calls for a large cluster of releases in 2005. (See the illustration “Many Windows Releases in 2005“.) Consequently, some features planned for 2005 could be cut and moved into later releases. For example, Microsoft has already delayed some features that were planned for Windows Server 2003 R2 in 2005 until Windows Longhorn Server ships in 2007.
