Office, Project, and Visio Roadmap Overview

Office 2016 for Windows shipped in Sept. 2015. The latest version of the Office suite for Windows delivers improvements for collaboration (especially for Office 365 online services users), business intelligence, e-mail filtering, and other areas. The Project and Visio client software for Windows received updates at the same time. Office 2016 is largely backward compatible with Office 2013 and will be a logical target for migrations from Office 2007, which leaves Extended support in Oct. 2017.

Office 2016 for Mac and multitouch Office mobile applications for Windows 10 (not shown) are also now available. Office Online Server (formerly Office Web Apps Server), which enables Office document viewing and editing in a browser, is available in preview as of Oct. 2015 and will probably ship with SharePoint Server 2016 in mid-2016.

Microsoft has not announced the next version of the Office suite for Windows, but the next major version, labeled Office 2019 here, will probably be available in 2018. The Office 365 ProPlus Per-User subscription suite for Windows, the Office Online Microsoft-hosted service, and Office Universal applications for phones and tablets will get frequent updates, following the pattern of other products tied to Office 365 subscriptions.
