Azure DocumentDB is a hosted NoSQL (Not Only SQL) database management platform for cross-platform Web and mobile applications that need a flexible data schema. Updates introduce features for location-aware mobile applications, improved management, and protocols to help customers migrate from other NoSQL database formats with minimal application changes. Packaging changes retire existing tiers and introduce a format that charges independently for performance and storage, which should help customers control costs and better configure service components to meet their requirements.

DocumentDB Overview

Azure DocumentDB addresses the growing demand for Web and mobile applications. Global scaling and performance features make it well suited for Internet of Things (IoT) workloads and large multiuser applications. DocumentDB stores data in containers called Collections and uses JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) documents, which provides a flexible data schema that works across platforms. The service also provides programming interfaces for popular languages, automated deployment, and access to data in the service using familiar SQL Server commands and tools, which could accelerate adoption by organizations new to JSON.
