Azure Elastic SAN provides managed block storage for Azure VMs and containers using iSCSI volumes that have configurable capacity and performance. It offers similar storage management and consolidation benefits as a traditional on-premises SAN, allowing on-premises workloads to be migrated with minimal redesign.

Near Term (2026–2027)

Azure Backup support for Elastic SAN remains in public preview since it was introduced in Apr. 2025. There’s no timeline for general availability.

Elastic SAN is a relatively recent addition to Azure and has yet to be rolled out to all regions. In addition, some regions support both zone redundant storage (ZRS) and locally redundant storage (LRS) while others support LRS only.

Long Term (Beyond 2027)

Many organizations rely on SANs as part of their on-premises infrastructure, so having a cloud native offering is an important part of Microsoft’s efforts to enable lift-and-shift of large-scale workloads.
