In BriefDev Box Merges into Windows 365
Microsoft Dev Box will block new customers starting Nov. 1, 2025, and it will eventually merge into Windows 365. Dev Box hosts workstations for software developers and related roles on Azure VMs, enabling quick provisioning of tools, platform software, and project source code. Existing Dev Box customers, including any who have provisioned Dev Box in their tenancies, are not immediately affected. However, they should participate in previews of the merged Windows 365–Dev Box service so they can move quickly when Microsoft announces the end date for the current Dev Box. In Windows 365, Dev Box will require Frontline licenses. A Frontline license costs 50% higher than the usual WIndows 365 Enterprise license, but the Frontline license can cover up to three Windows 365 Cloud PCs (VMs) for developers working multiple shifts or in separate time zones. A more detailed forecast for Windows 365 is in the Directions Desktop and Client Roadmap at “Windows 365 Roadmap.” Dev Box features are summarized at “Service Provides Hosted Windows Dev Boxes“. Microsoft’s announcement of the Dev Box plan is at “Microsoft Dev Box capabilities are coming to Windows 365.” (Microsoft)
