- SharePoint 2013 workflows are legacy technology and should be replaced.
- Microsoft is removing SharePoint 2013 workflows from SharePoint Online as of Apr. 2026 but not from SharePoint Server SE.
- Customers wanting to continue using them with SharePoint Server SE will need to use SharePoint Workflow Manager.
- Power Automate may be the most logical platform option for online and on-premises workflows, but there are licensing implications.
Microsoft is removing SharePoint 2013 workflows from SharePoint Online by Apr. 2026 but will continue to support them in SharePoint Server Subscription Edition (SE). Power Automate may be the practical option to replace the legacy workflows technology in many organizations, but it incurs additional costs and is not viable for on-premises customers without Internet access. Despite support for legacy workflows in SharePoint Server, customers should not rely on technology that Microsoft will probably retire soon. Microsoft also is ending support for SharePoint Designer 2013, used to create and test SharePoint 2013 workflows, in July 2026.
