Charts & IllustrationsArc-Enabled SQL Server Management Feature Comparison
Arc-enabled SQL Server provides access to features that help manage SQL Server outside of Azure; however, available features depend on several factors. The chart shows which Arc-related features and services (on the left) that are available based on the following:
- SQL Server version – it supports all versions still in support, currently 2012 – 2022
- License type assigned – license with or without Software Assurance (Sa) and Pay-as-you-go (PAYG) licensing which includes SA
- Hosting OS – SQL Server is available on currents Windows versions and Linux
As the chart shows, only SQL Server 2022, licensed with Software Assurance (SA), and deployed on Windows has access to all the features.
Some of the capabilities are available without Arc (far right column); however, those features are more automated and faster to deploy when using Arc, because the service provides prebuilt connections and can execute the features simultaneously across multiple instances.
Finally, some features, such as Microsoft Purview, Defender for SQL, and Entra ID integration require setting up other Azure services and incur additional cost.
