Free and paid tiers of Azure Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) offer an additional layer of security when used with AAD credentials. Azure MFA is a Microsoft-hosted service that provides multifactor authentication to applications that are integrated with the service.

The free tier of the Azure MFA service is available for use with Office 365 and is also available for administrators of Azure services. The free tier offers basic MFA functionality but supports limited configurability and no customizability.

The paid tier of Azure MFA is a stand-alone service that is also included in Microsoft’s Azure Active Directory (AAD) Premium User Subscription License and the Enterprise Mobility Suite (EMS), which includes AAD Premium. Only the paid subscription tier of Azure MFA can be customized, used with on-premises systems, and embedded into custom applications.
